In 1751 the hotel was extensively rebuilt and a fine Georgian frontage was added, which has remained part of the landscape of Southampton high street ever since. William IV and Adelaide, his Queen bestowed their coat of arms on the hotel which was a popular place to rest for the night in the Elizabethan era. The hotel remained fashionable during the 19th century and was host to such celebrities as Queen Victoria, Jane Austen and Thackeray.

The lobby is medium sized with lots of seating. There is a bar to the left of the reception desk serving a variety of beverages.

The restaurant is an informal dining area, very bright and spacious with open log fires and a mix of modern and period features.
